Fugitive Caregiver Extradited from Spain to Begin Six-Year Prison Sentence

The British justice system has finally brought a long-running case to a close following the extradition of Pamela Gwinnett, a caregiver who had been on the run since last spring. Gwinnett has been transferred from Tenerife to Manchester, where she is now serving a six-year prison sentence handed down by a Preston court. Her flight began in April 2025, when she left the UK in direct violation of bail conditions that prohibited her from traveling abroad.

The case, which involved close collaboration between the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish authorities, underscores the challenges of prosecuting those who flee the country to escape justice. Gwinnett, who was tried and sentenced in her absence, had abused her position as a personal assistant to Joan Green, a retired accountant from Lancashire. Investigators found that Gwinnett systematically manipulated the elderly woman, isolating her from her family to steal her life savings.

For the victim’s family, the resolution is bittersweet; Joan Green passed away in 2022, long before she could see justice served. Officer Georgia Loughton of the Greater Manchester Police noted that Gwinnett’s imprisonment is intended to provide some closure to the family, whose suffering was only prolonged by her attempt to evade the law.

Gwinnett now faces further legal trouble. After arriving in the UK this Thursday, she was taken into custody and is expected to appear before the Manchester Magistrates' Court. She will face additional charges for failing to appear in court—a crime stemming from her escape to Spain, which she attempted after a judge had already denied her request to leave the country under the false pretext of scattering a relative's ashes. International police cooperation was ultimately the key to locating her in the Canary Islands and bringing her back to face the consequences.
