Fuerteventura is hosting the final stage of the 43rd Canary Islands School-Age Sports Championships this weekend, featuring under-17 badminton athletes from across the archipelago.

The Canary Islands government is continuing its push to encourage youth sports this weekend in Fuerteventura, which will host the final stage of the 43rd Canary Islands School-Age Sports Championships. The regional Ministry of Sports announced that the Puerto del Rosario Island Sports Center will host the under-17 badminton finals. More than just a competition, the event aims to bring young people from across the islands together.

Organized by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, the tournament will follow a round-robin format over two days. Five rounds—three on Saturday and two on Sunday—will decide the winners. The event will feature around 30 athletes divided into mixed teams of six (three boys and three girls), supported by 10 coaches. Teams will represent Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the "Green Islands" collective, which includes athletes from La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera.

Óliver Gausmann, president of the Canary Islands Badminton Federation, emphasized the importance of bringing the championship back to Fuerteventura, noting its value in teaching life skills and strengthening ties between the islands. The event is a joint effort between the regional federation and the Island Council of Fuerteventura, reflecting public policy goals to promote healthy living and character development through organized sports.

Beyond identifying young talent, the tournament helps decentralize sports activities, giving islands outside the main capitals a chance to lead the regional calendar. This weekend’s event in Puerto del Rosario serves as a vital step in building community and supporting the athletic growth of the region's youth.
