Fuerteventura Basketball Referee Assaulted
A basketball referee was assaulted by a player and threatened by a fan during a game in Fuerteventura, receiving medical care and marking the latest in a series of attacks on officials in the Canary Islands.
Police in Fuerteventura received a report this Sunday about a basketball referee being assaulted. This incident highlights growing worries about violence in sports and the safety of officials.
The assault reportedly happened on Saturday during a game between Toscones Corralejo and Probasketlab Fuenlabrada. It occurred in the third quarter when a player from Toscones Corralejo attacked the referee, pushing him from behind. When the referee fell, the player stomped on his stomach. Other teammates stepped in to stop the player, but he then verbally abused the referee. The situation got worse when a fan from the local team ran onto the court and made serious threats to the referee.
Because of how serious the incident was, and for their own safety, the referees went to the changing rooms. The game only continued after the aggressive player was removed from the match. The referee who was assaulted received medical care in Fuerteventura right after the incident, and again on Sunday in Tenerife.
This incident is the latest in a troubling series of attacks on basketball officials in the Canary Islands, making it the third in recent years. Last season, a female referee was attacked in La Palma, and another official was assaulted in Tenerife in 2021. These events show how important it is to fully address the need to protect and respect the professionals who make sports competitions possible.
