French Icon Brigitte Bardot Dead at 91
Iconic French actress, singer, and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has died at the age of 91.
Brigitte Bardot, the famous actress and singer, died this Sunday at 91. Her death was announced by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation.
Born in Paris in 1934, Bardot became one of the most influential figures in French culture and European cinema during the 1950s and 1960s. She was also seen as a symbol of sensuality for her era.
Bardot started her artistic journey in ballet. However, she made her film debut at just 18 in Le Trou normand (1952), and her career quickly took off. She starred in many important films, including The Woman and the Puppet, Contempt, Viva Maria!, and The Testament of Orpheus. She also worked with renowned directors like Jean-Luc Godard, Louis Malle, and Jean Cocteau.
In the mid-1950s, Bardot moved into Hollywood films, a rare feat for European actresses at the time who often struggled to gain recognition in the American industry. She co-starred with Kirk Douglas in Un acte d’amour and later appeared as herself alongside James Stewart in Dear Brigitte. While many of her movies were box office hits, critics didn't always praise her performances.
Beyond her acting, Brigitte Bardot was a major fashion icon. Her appearance in a bikini at Cannes in the early 1950s made a huge splash and helped popularize a style that challenged the norms of the time. The "Bardot neckline," which exposes the shoulders, was named after her and is still fashionable decades later. Even today, her look continues to inspire designers and brands each summer, bringing back scarves, espadrilles, and other styles linked to her image.
Bardot officially retired from acting in 1973. From then on, she dedicated her life to animal rights, pouring much of her time and effort into the foundation named after her. She spent her last years at La Madrague, her home in Saint-Tropez, surrounded by her dogs, cats, and doves.
Bardot's life was also marked by controversy. She publicly supported Jean-Marie Le Pen's far-right party. During the pandemic, she was critical of vaccines and French President Emmanuel Macron's health policies.
