This week, cinemas are bringing out several new films, including the comedy Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser, the musical Song Sung Blue, Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, Kristen Stewart's directorial debut The Chronology of Water, and the animated adventure Santa's Mission: Yoyo to the Rescue for younger viewers.
Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser returns to the big screen in Rental Family. Directed by Japanese filmmaker Hikari, this comedy-drama is set in modern Tokyo. It explores themes of loneliness and unexpected human connections with a mix of humor and sadness. Fraser plays an American actor who takes on an unusual job at a "rental family" agency, where pretending to be part of other people's lives helps him rediscover his own.
Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson lead the cast of Song Sung Blue, a musical comedy from director Craig Brewer, known for the 2011 remake of Footloose. Kate Hudson has earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in this moving and uplifting story about second chances. Based on real events, the film follows two musicians who form a Neil Diamond tribute band, learning that it's never too late for love or to chase your dreams.
From Richard Linklater, the acclaimed director behind the Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight), comes Nouvelle Vague. This film is a lively tribute to the birth of the French New Wave cinema movement. It humorously and passionately recreates the filming of Jean-Luc Godard's iconic movie Breathless in Paris in 1959. Actor Guillaume Marbeck plays Godard, guiding the creative chaos alongside young stars Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo as they revolutionize cinema with improvisation and youthful rebellion.
The Chronology of Water marks the first time Oscar-nominated actress Kristen Stewart steps into the director's chair. The film boasts a strong cast, led by British actress Imogen Poots, whose powerful performance has impressed both critics and audiences. Thora Birch and Jim Belushi (who also appears in Song Sung Blue) are also featured. Based on Lidia Yuknavitch's bestselling memoir, the story follows a young swimmer growing up in an environment marked by alcohol and violence. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and has since won several international awards.
Finally, Santa's Mission: Yoyo to the Rescue arrives in cinemas. This family animation, released a little later than planned, tells the story of Santa's workshop, which has become a cold, high-tech factory. When a hacker disrupts everything and the toy deliveryman vanishes, Yoyo, an eager new elf, leads a chaotic mission to bring back the traditional magic of Christmas.
