A former National Police inspector in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is under investigation for allegedly taking bribes to fast-track immigration paperwork for Chinese residents in the south of the island. The officer, who is over 60 and no longer holds the position, is at the center of a judicial inquiry into potential corruption within the immigration office.
The investigation, which is currently under seal, aims to determine if the official abused his authority to jump the queue for certain applicants. In an office already struggling with heavy workloads and long delays, any unauthorized priority given to specific files is not only a criminal matter but also unfair to other applicants waiting their turn according to official rules.
The case is being handled by a team from Madrid working alongside the Unit Against Immigration Networks and Document Forgery (UCRIF). Investigators are looking into whether the former director received money or other favors in exchange for speeding up the processing of these specific applications.
The probe has expanded to include the applicants who benefited from this scheme to see if they face any criminal liability for their involvement. This case underscores the risks of corruption in high-pressure bureaucratic environments, where the power to control waiting times can be exploited for personal gain.
