A former inmate faces a seven-year prison sentence as the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife prepares to try him for allegedly trafficking crack cocaine and cannabis within the Tenerife II facility.

Security in prisons is back under judicial scrutiny following a case set to be heard at the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Prosecutors have detailed the seizure of narcotics at the Tenerife II facility, highlighting the ongoing struggle to prevent drug trafficking within the prison system.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a seven-year prison sentence for a former inmate. Prosecutors allege that the man was storing 3.13 grams of high-purity crack cocaine (93%) and 8 grams of cannabis resin in his cell. They claim he intended to sell these drugs to other inmates for an estimated profit of 473 euros.

Legally, the case is classified as a crime against public health, specifically an aggravated offense due to the nature of the substances involved. The prosecution notes that there are no mitigating or aggravating factors to adjust the defendant's criminal liability.

The trial is scheduled for June 15. Testimony will be provided by several prison officials, including the Deputy Director of Security, as well as experts who analyzed the seized drugs. The defendant, who has finished his previous sentence, is currently on provisional release. The outcome of this trial will provide insight into how drug trafficking is penalized within the prison system, where such activities violate internal rules and undermine efforts toward rehabilitation.
