Foreign Hiker Critical After Los Gigantes Cliff Fall
A 23-year-old foreign woman is in critical condition after a hiking fall in Tenerife's Los Gigantes Cliffs prompted a complex helicopter rescue and resuscitation.
A 23-year-old woman from another country is in critical condition after accidentally falling while hiking in the Los Gigantes Cliffs. The accident happened on Wednesday at 1:09 PM in Santiago del Teide.
Emergency services received a call reporting that a woman had fallen in a very hard-to-reach area while hiking with four other people. This led to a large emergency response.
Because of her serious injuries and the difficult terrain, an Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) helicopter was called in. The helicopter found the woman and rescued her by air. She was taken to the Adeje helipad, where paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) found she had stopped breathing and her heart had stopped.
Paramedics immediately started CPR and, after several critical minutes, managed to restart her heart. Once stable, she was taken by ambulance to Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital, where she is still in critical condition.
After rescuing the seriously injured woman, the GES helicopter went back to pick up the other four hikers. They were flown to the La Guancha helipad. There, SUC staff treated a 21-year-old woman, also from another country, for a mild anxiety attack and sent her to a hospital. The other three hikers were not hurt.
Many emergency teams were involved in the rescue, including GES, SUC, the Tenerife Fire Consortium, the Civil Guard, and the Local Police. The Civil Guard is now investigating the accident to understand exactly what happened.
This incident is a reminder of how dangerous some trails in the Los Gigantes Cliffs can be, especially in exposed and hard-to-reach areas, where a fall can have very serious consequences.
