Fognini Returns to Court in Tenerife Exhibition
Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini, after a year-long absence following what was widely considered his retirement, returned to the court for an exhibition match in Tenerife, playing with young talents and sharing his views on modern tennis.
Fabio Fognini, the Italian tennis player and former world number nine, has returned to the court for an exhibition match at the Abama Tennis Academy in Tenerife. This was his first time on court in a year, following his last competitive match at Wimbledon. That match, a first-round loss to Carlos Alcaraz, was initially seen as his retirement from the professional circuit.
Fognini said he was happy to be back playing, though he admitted he hadn't missed the tour during his time away. Still, he stressed his desire to stay connected to the sport that has defined his professional life for two decades. The exhibition, held before the final of the Tenerife II Challenger, allowed him to share the court with young Canarian talents like Saúl Pacheco Benasayag, Joel Toral Ocaña, and Samuel García Hernández, at facilities Fognini himself has praised.
Fognini also shared his thoughts on the state of modern tennis, mentioning fellow Italians Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner, as well as Novak Djokovic's recent performance in Australia. He wasn't concerned about Sinner's loss to Djokovic, whom he called the most dominant player in history, saying it was no cause for worry. The Italian emphasized that great champions always find a way to overcome challenges. He also downplayed comparisons between different generations of tennis players, highlighting the value of his own extensive experience on the professional circuit. It's worth noting that Fognini faced Djokovic nine times in his career, never winning any of those matches.
