Tenerife is preparing for large-scale volcanic eruption response drills to assess the island's readiness for an emergency.

Tenerife is preparing for large-scale exercises to respond to a volcanic eruption, which will take place from September 22 to 26 in the town of Garachico. On September 9, a meeting was held between representatives of the local authorities (Cabildo de Tenerife) with all 31 municipalities of the island to involve them in the participation.

"Although the greatest threat of eruption concerns only six municipalities, we want all communities to be prepared," said the head of Cabildo, Rosa Davila.

These exercises are conducted within the framework of the European Union Civil Protection Program. According to Davila, their goal is to check how well Tenerife will be able to cope with an emergency situation if a volcano suddenly awakens. That is, in Garachico, the island's readiness for a possible eruption will be assessed.

Meetings have already been held with representatives of the six municipalities that are in the area of greatest risk: Garachico, Icod de los Vinos, Guía de Isora, Santiago del Teide, El Tanque and La Orotava.
