Fire Destroys Informal Settlement in Arona, Tenerife
A fire that destroyed several makeshift structures in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, on Friday has once again highlighted the critical issue of housing insecurity and safety risks in the region's informal settlements.
A fire in Arona, Tenerife, on Friday once again highlighted the issue of housing insecurity in the south of the island. According to the EFE news agency, the blaze destroyed several makeshift structures near Amsterdam Avenue in Los Cristianos. These informal settlements, often found in urban and tourist areas, are difficult for emergency crews to reach and are highly flammable due to the materials used to build them.
Emergency services were alerted at 12:26 p.m., and 112 Canarias coordinated a swift response to bring the fire under control. The operation involved the Tenerife Fire Consortium, the Local Police, and the National Police. A basic life support ambulance was also on standby as a precaution, though fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby areas. The incident underscores the vulnerability of those living in substandard housing, where a lack of basic infrastructure and fire safety measures makes any fire a serious threat to the lives of the occupants.
