Fimucité Marks 20th Anniversary With Record-Breaking Success and Star-Studded Lineup
The 20th edition of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (Fimucité) concluded successfully, drawing nearly 10,000 attendees to a series of sold-out concerts, educational workshops, and tributes to legendary composers.
The 20th anniversary of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (Fimucité) has cemented its status as a cornerstone of the islands' cultural scene, drawing nearly 10,000 attendees. This success is a testament to the festival's resilience; despite a crowded local calendar—including the World Cup final and other major events—the audience remained loyal, showing strong support despite logistical challenges and stiff competition.
The festival spanned several venues, including the Auditorio de Tenerife, Teatro Leal in La Laguna, and Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Key events, such as the Red Carpet Gala and the national premiere of John Williams Reimagined, reached full capacity. The latter, led by Robert Townson, featured fresh arrangements of the composer’s iconic work, from his Star Wars scores to Schindler's List. Other highlights, including a live orchestral screening of Star Wars: A New Hope and a recital by pianist Aleksander Debicz, also saw near-capacity crowds.
Festival director and founder Diego Navarro praised his team’s hard work, noting their ability to maintain high artistic standards despite external pressures. The festival also extended into the community with popular free events: 3,000 people attended the opening in Plaza de la Candelaria, while another 1,200 enjoyed outdoor screenings and a Municipal Band concert at Plaza del Príncipe and Residencial Anaga.
Education remained a key focus, with the Fimucité Film Scoring Academy hosting over 120 students at the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias. Attendees learned from industry legends like John Corigliano, Stephen Warbeck, and Craig Stuart Garfinkle. The festival’s international reach was further bolstered by appearances from artists including Eímear Noone, Simone Pedroni, Javier Comesaña, Sara Andon, and Irene Alvar Rozas.
The event concluded by honoring composer John Corigliano with the Fimucité Antón García Abril Prize. The emotional highlight of the closing gala was a performance of his Chaconne from The Red Violin, which received seven standing ovations. After two decades, the festival continues to prove its enduring power to captivate audiences.
