The Filmoteca Canaria is hosting free screenings of Ingmar Bergman’s 1951 drama Summer Interlude in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on May 5 and Santa Cruz de Tenerife on May 7 as part of a retrospective on the director's early work.

The Filmoteca Canaria is screening Ingmar Bergman’s 1951 film Summer Interlude this week. The showing is part of a retrospective series focusing on the Swedish director’s early work, a period that marks his transition toward the deep psychological storytelling he became famous for later in his career.

The film explores themes of memory and the fragility of relationships. It follows a ballerina at a turning point in her life, contrasting her maturity with the memory of a tragic romance from her youth. Through this story, Bergman examines recurring subjects like the brevity of life and the impact of family, offering viewers a look at the foundations of his signature style.

Admission is free until the venues reach capacity. There are two screenings: Tuesday, May 5th, at the Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Thursday, May 7th, at the Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Both screenings begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be shown in their original language with Spanish subtitles.
