The Filmoteca Canaria is hosting a retrospective dedicated to the early work of Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. Titled "Bergman before Bergman," the series explores the creative roots of the director who would go on to shape the language of modern cinema. It offers a unique look at his development as he began to define his artistic identity and explore the existential themes that would later become his trademark.

Running throughout April and May, the program features five key films: Crisis (1946), Prison (1949), To Joy (1950), Summer Interlude (1951), and Winter Light (1962). These screenings provide a rare chance to see these early works on the big screen and observe how the elements of his later, internationally acclaimed style were already taking shape.

The series kicks off this week with Crisis. It will be shown this Tuesday at the Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and on Thursday at Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. All screenings start at 7:00 p.m. and will be shown in their original language with Spanish subtitles. Tickets can be purchased online through the venues' websites or at their box offices.

By showcasing these formative films, the Filmoteca Canaria offers a deeper understanding of Bergman’s career, moving beyond the typical focus on his later masterpieces. This series provides a valuable opportunity to trace the evolution of a cinematic voice that became a cornerstone of European culture.
