Filmoteca Canaria Launches Fifth Annual LGTBIQA+ Pride Film Series
The Filmoteca Canaria is hosting its fifth "Diversity, Equality, and Culture" film series across the Canary Islands throughout June and July to promote LGTBIQA+ visibility through a curated selection of five feature films.
The Filmoteca Canaria has announced the fifth edition of its "Diversity, Equality, and Culture" film series, held in support of LGTBIQA+ Pride. Managed by the Canary Islands Institute of Cultural Development, the initiative aims to highlight sexual and gender diversity through five feature films showing across the islands throughout June and July.
Screenings will take place at three main venues: the Teatro Guiniguada in Gran Canaria, the Espacio La Granja in Tenerife, and the Auditorio Insular in Fuerteventura. The series kicks off with Orlando, My Political Biography, a documentary by Paul B. Preciado that reimagines Virginia Woolf’s classic work. The film premieres this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a screening in Puerto del Rosario following on July 1 at 8:00 p.m.
The program features a diverse selection of films exploring identity and society. These include Martha Coolidge’s 1970s feminist classic Not a Pretty Picture; Todd Haynes’ Carol, a drama set in 1950s America; Maryam Touzani’s The Blue Caftan, which examines the private experience of homosexuality in Morocco; and Fernando Franco’s The Rite of Spring, which explores the intersection of sexuality and functional diversity.
By showcasing narratives that challenge traditional norms, the Filmoteca Canaria uses cinema as a tool for social education. These films help bring historically marginalized stories into the public eye, offering viewers a chance to reflect on the fight for equality and the importance of civil rights. Through this mix of documentaries, dramas, and auteur cinema, the series serves as a space for critical discussion on the many identities that make up our contemporary world.
