Filmoteca Canaria Concludes Diversity Film Series with 'The Rite of Spring'
The Filmoteca Canaria concludes its LGTBIQA+ Pride film series this week with screenings of Fernando Franco’s The Rite of Spring, a drama exploring intimacy and disability.
The Filmoteca Canaria is wrapping up its film series dedicated to diversity and equality this week. Held as part of the LGTBIQA+ Pride celebrations, the program concludes with screenings of Fernando Franco’s The Rite of Spring (La consagración de la primavera). The series aims to highlight stories often overlooked by mainstream cinema, specifically focusing on sexuality and relationships for people with disabilities.
The film is praised for its grounded, stereotype-free approach. It follows Laura, a university student adjusting to life in the city while facing financial and personal uncertainty. Her journey shifts when she meets David, a young man with cerebral palsy, and his mother, played by Emma Suárez. Their relationship serves as a catalyst for Laura’s personal growth and prompts a deeper reflection on maturity and the unpredictability of life.
To make the film accessible to as many people as possible, screenings will be held at three different locations:
- Gran Canaria: Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Teatro Guiniguada.
- Tenerife: Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Espacio La Granja.
- Fuerteventura: Wednesday, July 29, at 8:00 p.m. at the Auditorio Insular.
By choosing this film, the Filmoteca Canaria highlights the importance of including disability in conversations about sexual and gender diversity. By focusing on desire and personal autonomy, the organization reinforces its commitment to using film not just for entertainment, but as a tool for social awareness that challenges the barriers surrounding how we represent intimacy.
