The 28th Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (Ficmec) has unveiled a new visual identity centered on the environmental impact of technology ahead of its upcoming events in Tenerife this May and June.

The 28th Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (Ficmec) has officially begun its countdown, unveiling a new visual identity that highlights the intersection of technology and sustainability. The festival will continue its tradition of decentralization in northern Tenerife, taking place in Garachico from May 28 to 31, followed by events in Icod de los Vinos from June 4 to 7.

This year’s artwork, designed by artist María Pulido, serves as a commentary on the physical impact of the digital age. By using pixelated imagery and unnatural colors, the design challenges the idea that the digital world is "immaterial." The festival’s slogan, #enlasnubes (#intheclouds), highlights the paradox of hyper-connectivity: while we view data as "light," storing and processing it requires significant resources, labor, and environmental exploitation, even extending to the seabed.

Ficmec has long explored the relationship between humanity and the environment, and its 2026 program will focus on a critical look at artificial intelligence. Beyond film screenings, the festival aims to spark debate on how technology can be integrated into society without harming local communities or the environment. The poster’s lunar imagery serves as a metaphor for the expansion of technology into space, which the festival links to the constant global demand for raw materials.

By addressing these themes, Ficmec positions itself at the heart of the debate on technological sovereignty and environmental responsibility. The organizers will soon release further details on screenings and workshops via their official website, continuing the festival’s mission to challenge viewers to consider the real-world consequences of our digital habits.
