The Ficindie Film Festival, which will showcase independent and auteur cinema until October 29 on three islands, has kicked off in the Canary Islands.
Ficindie, a cool film festival of independent and auteur cinema, is kicking off in the Canary Islands! From today until October 29, Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria will be screening interesting films.
Every Thursday, starting at 6:00 PM, film buffs will gather at the El Desleal Cultural Hall in La Laguna to watch bold, unusual, and diverse films from Europe, America, Africa, and Asia.
"El Desleal will become our main venue for independent cinema. Here, you can discover films that experiment with form and content, as well as interact with their creators," says Rumen Justo Reyes, director of Ficindie. "We want to make it possible to watch world independent cinema every week in La Laguna. And trips to La Palma and Gran Canaria will help create a community, attract new audiences, and establish a dialogue between the islands," he explains.
Today, October 2, El Desleal will screen a program that intertwines personal stories and social issues: the short film "The Virgin, My Grandmother and Me," the feature film "Agronomist," and the play "Churreri." Together, they create an emotional picture that encompasses both the personal and the public.
On Thursday, October 9, the film "Miguel Velázquez, Professor of the Ring," which tells the story of the glorious times of Canarian boxing, will be shown. It will be accompanied by the micro-play "The Cat and the Fish." On Thursday, October 16, the film "Life on Canvas" and the short film "Infatuation" will be shown – two perspectives on desire and creativity. On Thursday, October 23, the film "Prado and the Moon" – reflections on heritage and memory, as well as "Yaya" – a story about deep human experiences, will be shown.
In addition to the Thursday screenings, the festival also has an educational program. On Tuesday, October 7, at 4:00 PM, the University of La Laguna will screen the short films "5/3/0" and "Holy Heavens." After the screening, there will be a discussion about new opportunities for creativity in the Canary Islands.
On Saturday, October 11, a block of short films will be shown in Santa Cruz de la Palma from 6:00 PM: "Nena," "Left-Handed," "Holy Heavens," "The Virgin, My Grandmother and Me," and "Guasimara." These films represent new voices and personal perspectives. On Friday, October 17, the festival will visit the Bajamar Community Center in La Laguna. There, at 6:00 PM, the documentary diptych "Dakhla, Cinema and Oblivion" and "Minor" – a critical look at the periphery of the story – will be shown.
And on Friday, October 24, the César Manrique Integrated Vocational Training Center in Santa Cruz will screen films of various lengths and formats from 9:00 AM: "Infatuation," "The Cat and the Fish," "Looking for Light," "The Silence of Stilt Houses," "Good Luck, Josefa," "Extramarital Archive," and "Left-Handed."
