Director Fernando León de Aranoa is filming La náufraga, a new four-part Movistar Plus series that explores the Mediterranean humanitarian crisis by following the investigation of a wealthy European woman rescued from a migrant boat.

Fernando León de Aranoa is shifting his focus to episodic storytelling with La náufraga, a new project for Movistar Plus that expands his signature interest in social issues. The series breaks from traditional formats to explore migration through a provocative premise: a wealthy European woman and her infant are found on a makeshift boat rescued at sea.

Filming is currently underway across Spain—including Madrid, Alicante, and the Canary Islands—as well as in Morocco. The four-part series centers on the aftermath of the rescue, following a lawyer specializing in maritime humanitarian crises as they investigate how such an unusual situation occurred.

The cast features Belén Cuesta, Guillermo Toledo, Raúl Arévalo, Margot Bancilhon, and Fily Diagne. The production also marks another collaboration between León de Aranoa and producer Jaume Roures, continuing a professional partnership that has spanned over two decades.

By placing a privileged character in a position of extreme vulnerability, the series aims to challenge how European audiences view borders and the Mediterranean humanitarian crisis. León de Aranoa describes the project as an attempt to examine what he considers the greatest challenge and failure of modern society, positioning La náufraga as a significant and thought-provoking addition to the upcoming television season.
