Fatal Assault in Tenerife Tourist Hub Sparks Urgent Calls for Security Reform
The fatal assault of a British man in Playa de las Américas has reignited urgent calls from local business owners for increased police presence and long-delayed surveillance measures to address escalating crime in the area.
The recent violent death of a 37-year-old British man near the Verónicas shopping centers in Playa de las Américas has sparked a fresh debate over security in one of Arona’s busiest tourist areas. The man died following an assault in the early hours of Thursday, reigniting concerns from local business owners who say the area is suffering from a persistent decline in public order, fueled by heavy alcohol and drug use.
This is not an isolated incident. The area has a long history of trouble, ranging from large-scale brawls to sexual assaults. While the Circle of Entrepreneurs of the South of Tenerife (CEST) acknowledges the importance of the nightlife district to the island’s tourism, they warn that the situation is spiraling out of control. Despite past attempts to improve safety, business owners argue that crime is rising and requires a much stronger response from authorities.
The business association believes that while police agree with their assessment of the problem, there is a lack of political will to fix it. Their most urgent request is for video surveillance cameras around the shopping centers—a measure they say has been stalled by bureaucracy for 15 years. They are also calling for more police officers to patrol on foot during peak hours, particularly between midnight and dawn, and for better coordination between the National and Local police forces.
Local business representative Michael Bharwani also points to illegal street vending as a major factor, linking it to small-scale drug dealing. Meanwhile, the Arona mayor’s office has declined to comment on the incident or outline any new security measures. The ongoing conflict highlights the struggle to balance a vibrant nightlife with public safety in a destination that has faced these same challenges for over 40 years.
