Fasnia Residents Petition for New Health Center After Regional Funding Cuts
Residents of Fasnia are petitioning the Canary Islands government to resume construction of a new health center after regional officials stalled the project despite the municipality fulfilling all land requirements.
Residents of Fasnia are mobilizing to demand the construction of a new health center, frustrated by the regional government’s decision to halt the project. According to El Día, locals have launched a petition to pressure officials to restart work on the facility, which they argue is essential for basic healthcare.
The project has stalled due to a shift in regional funding. While the Fasnia City Council fulfilled its obligations by purchasing and handing over the land as requested by the Ministry of Health, the budget line that covered the project’s initial planning in 2023 was removed for 2024. The Canary Islands government claims the clinic is not a priority for the Tenerife Primary Care Management’s 2026 plan.
Mayor Luis Javier González and local residents describe the current clinic as unsustainable. The aging building lacks emergency facilities and suffers from logistical issues that hinder both patient care and staff working conditions. The mayor noted that the town had previously offered to expand the existing building, but regional authorities advised against it, insisting instead that the town buy land for a new facility—a task the municipality has already completed.
Caught in a standoff between local needs and regional health service planning, residents have begun collecting signatures at local shops and community centers. With no clear timeline for the project, the community is now turning to public pressure to ensure the health center finally moves forward.
