European Outdoor Film Tour Kicks Off Spanish Leg in Tenerife
The European Outdoor Film Tour (EOFT), showcasing mountain sports and nature conservation films, begins its Spanish leg this Sunday in Tenerife at the University of La Laguna Auditorium, featuring six international short films.
The European Outdoor Film Tour (EOFT), a festival showcasing mountain sports films, kicks off its Spanish tour this Sunday in Tenerife. The tour will visit a dozen cities across Spain. This afternoon, starting at 6:00 PM, the University of La Laguna (ULL) Auditorium will screen six short films from Germany, Switzerland, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
Now in its twenty-sixth year – and its sixth time in Spain – the festival has always championed nature conservation, especially for mountains. Its organizers state that "the EOFT aims to use cinema to highlight this issue because understanding it together is crucial for protecting and preserving our natural environment, which is vital for all life on Earth. This commitment has been central to the EOFT from the start and has spread through every program and event for over two decades."
The festival features inspiring stories of overcoming challenges, personal achievements, life journeys, clever solutions, and humor. These tales are set against the stunning and demanding backdrops of the world's highest peaks and harshest climates. After its Tenerife premiere, the tour will visit 27 countries, holding over 550 events. So far, 350,000 people have attended the festival.
The EOFT organization emphasizes that "the EOFT offers fresh thrills, adrenaline, and emotions to inspire adventurers and outdoor sports fans. It presents exciting stories and characters, alongside spectacular scenery, all while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals."
This year's festival includes Wild Days, a 44-minute French film about Aurel, Chris, Hélias, and Alex's 50-day journey through Alaska. Their goal is complete self-sufficiency as they tackle a tough trek across the Denali massif, far from civilization, aiming to reach the ocean using skis, expedition sleds, and rafts.
Gipfeli of Switzerland is a 30-minute film about student Tobias Renggli's unusual and delightful journey. He cycles and hikes through all 26 Swiss cantons, reaching their highest points. This challenge isn't just about going higher, faster, or farther; it's also about navigating life's ups and downs, with many gipfelis (Swiss pastries) serving as rewards on his mountain-conquering quest.
"I can do that." This simple phrase starts Sheri Tingey's personal challenge in Sheri, an American short film. It's a first-person account of her perseverance and ingenuity. Sheri has spent her life shaping the world and her clothing to suit her, which helped her create a unique place for herself in the outdoor industry.
In Elladj, a six-minute short film, professional Black skater Elladj Baldé shares his journey from an Olympic dream to skating on untouched ice in Canada's wild and beautiful landscapes. He breaks away from his original plans to reconnect with himself and his profession deep in nature.
Freja's Back brings viewers back to the mountains with versatile climber Freja Shannon. The film follows her return after a serious fall on the north face of Les Droites in the French Alps, which resulted in a broken back.
Finally, Drop the Line offers pure adrenaline, stunning scenery, and three minutes of fearless flight. It tells the story of Anthony Dutruy, who has found a new challenge in speed riding, taking viewers on a flight over slopes many can only dream of.
The European Outdoor Film Tour, presented in its original language with Spanish subtitles and sign language translation, "uses cinema to touch hearts, raise awareness, and promote the protection and preservation of natural areas."
