EU Updates Vehicle Inspection Rules to Include Battery Health and ADAS Checks

The European Union is updating vehicle inspection protocols to include stricter checks on electric battery health, emissions, and advanced driver assistance systems, while Spanish authorities continue to enforce heavy fines and insurance penalties for non-compliance.

The European Union is updating its vehicle inspection rules to keep pace with the rapid evolution of modern cars. These changes aim to improve road safety and meet environmental goals by modernizing how inspection centers assess vehicles.

A major focus of this reform is the oversight of electric and hybrid vehicles. Inspection centers will soon be required to use stricter protocols to check battery health and energy storage systems. Additionally, emissions testing will become more rigorous. This includes monitoring emissions throughout a vehicle's lifespan and measuring fine particles caused by brake and tire wear—a process not previously standard in Spain.

The inspection process will also include mandatory checks for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Features like emergency braking, lane-keeping assistants, and proximity sensors are now considered essential for safety, and their performance will be a key part of future inspection reports.

In Spain, authorities continue to enforce strict compliance with these inspections. Driving with an expired inspection carries a 200-euro fine. If a vehicle has already received an "unfavorable" report, the fine increases to 500 euros, and the vehicle may be immobilized.

Beyond the legal penalties, there is a significant insurance risk: if you are involved in an accident with an expired inspection, your insurance company may refuse to cover the damages because the vehicle was not legally roadworthy. It is important to note that simply having an appointment does not excuse you from having a valid inspection; the only exception is driving directly to the inspection station for your scheduled test.
