While individual countries already have their own digital tools—such as Spain’s MiDNI for identification or the MiDGT platform for driving records—the European proposal is unique because it is fully integrative. The new tool will combine these credentials into one interface, ensuring they are legally and technically valid in every EU country. This will remove the current hurdles that complicate cross-border travel and administrative tasks.
The system is designed to give users full control over their personal information. By allowing people to store official certificates and create legally binding electronic signatures, the European Commission aims to reduce the risks of losing physical documents and make verification processes much easier. This digital infrastructure will work for both online and in-person transactions, marking a significant milestone in the digitalization of the European single market by ensuring that digital identities are recognized automatically and securely across all participating countries.
