EU Mandates New Speed-Limiting Technology to Enhance Road Safety
New European Union regulations mandating advanced driver assistance systems, such as intelligent speed limiters, aim to enhance road safety and help drivers avoid traffic violations on Spanish roads.
Road safety is changing as European Union regulations push for new technology to help reduce accidents. Speed limiters, in particular, have become a reliable tool for drivers to avoid common traffic violations on Spanish roads.
While drivers are responsible for their own actions, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) continues to strictly monitor speeding. Depending on the severity of the offense, fines range from 100 to 600 euros, with 2 to 6 points deducted from the driver's license. To help avoid these penalties, most vehicles now feature steering-wheel-mounted speed limiters. These allow drivers to set a maximum speed that the car will not exceed, though the system can be overridden by pressing firmly on the accelerator in an emergency.
Using a speed limiter reduces the stress of constantly checking the speedometer, supporting the EU’s broader goal of improving road safety. As of this year, new vehicles must be equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), which is designed to help drivers stay within legal speed limits.
However, these technological aids do not replace the need for caution. While automation is a helpful tool, road safety still relies on the driver’s full attention and commitment to following traffic laws.
