'Espiga de Oro' Couplet Competition Returns to San Benito Festival
The "Espiga de Oro" couplet competition returns to the San Benito Festival in San Cristóbal de La Laguna this July as part of an effort to revive and preserve Canary Islands folk traditions.
The San Benito Festival in San Cristóbal de La Laguna is set to mark a major milestone in the revival of local folk traditions. After a three-year break, the "Espiga de Oro" (Golden Ear) couplet competition is returning to the festival’s official program. This comeback, organized by the Los Sabandeños Canary Foundation and the municipal Department of Festivals, is part of a broader effort to protect and celebrate the Canary Islands' intangible cultural heritage.
The contest is about more than just competition; it is a way to keep traditional Canarian lyricism alive. Dailos González, head of the Department of Festivals, noted that the event aims to showcase the talent of local songwriters by featuring their work in one of the city’s most popular celebrations.
Registration is now open for those interested in participating. Composers have until 2:00 p.m. on July 6, 2026, to submit their original works. The winner will receive a 500-euro prize and the prestigious "Espiga de Oro" title.
A jury of at least three folklore experts, appointed by the Los Sabandeños Canary Foundation, will judge the entries. They will meet privately on July 9 to reach a decision, which will then be announced through the City Council and the House Museum’s official channels. The awards ceremony will be held on July 11 at the Plaza de San Benito during the 8 Islands Festival, where local soloists will perform the winning songs.
This announcement comes just ahead of the full San Benito Festival program, which leads up to the traditional regional pilgrimage on July 12. The return of the "Espiga de Oro" has added to the excitement surrounding the festival, further strengthening its role in bringing the people of Tenerife together through culture.
