Environmentalists Protest Tourist Development Amid Accusations of Ecocide and Corruption

Environmental group Salvar El Puertito will protest this Sunday against the Cuna del Alma tourist development, citing irreversible environmental damage and alleged political favoritism despite ongoing legal challenges and the site's designation as a National Geological Interest Site.

Environmental group Salvar El Puertito is holding a protest this Sunday at noon on Playa Paraíso avenue. They are demonstrating against the Cuna del Alma tourist development, which began construction again a year ago.

The group states that the construction has "destroyed a large part of the slopes" near El Puertito de Adeje. They also note that even though the area was declared a National Geological Interest Site in 2023, the authorities responsible for approving the large-scale project – the Canary Islands Government, the Tenerife Island Council, and the Adeje City Council – have not stopped the work.

Despite three ongoing legal cases and several complaints against those in charge of the project, the group regrets that "the work is progressing as if to present a done deal."

They feel that "citizens are running out of options to stop this cherished and unique stretch of coastline from being lost." They are "tired of so much political favoritism towards developers without scruples and of a justice system that is slow and hesitant to take protective measures, where the public's interest and the principle of environmental caution seem to be completely ignored by the law."

The environmentalists plan to "keep fighting until the very end" to ensure the project "is never finished and those responsible are held accountable for the irreversible damage done."

They believe the developer is struggling to sell the luxury villas because the "Cuna del Alma" brand has developed a "terrible reputation." They suggest that buying a luxury villa here is now a risky investment due to ongoing legal challenges and the strong opposition from local residents.

The platform describes the development near El Puertito de Adeje as an "ecocide" that is "tainted with corruption."
