Endesa Launches Power Stability Plan for Pope’s Visit to Tenerife
Endesa has launched a comprehensive power grid protection plan, including strategic team deployment and infrastructure stress-testing, to ensure a stable energy supply during Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to Tenerife.
To ensure a stable power supply during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Tenerife on June 12, the energy company Endesa has launched an unprecedented protection plan. This measure is designed to handle the high demand expected from the massive crowds gathering at key locations throughout the papal visit.
The operation is part of a broader security framework coordinated by the Canary Islands Government, which has issued a pre-alert starting this Monday, escalating to a full alert on June 11 and 12. Endesa is focusing its efforts on monitoring the power infrastructure near critical sites, including the Las Raíces reception center in La Esperanza, the Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna, and the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the main religious service will be held.
To prevent any power outages, Endesa has combined technical grid adjustments with a stronger on-site presence. Specialist teams are now stationed in Santa Cruz and La Laguna, ready to respond quickly to any issues. Because road closures are expected during the visit, these teams have been strategically positioned to ensure they can navigate around traffic restrictions.
In addition to physical surveillance, the company has used data analysis to prepare for the event. This includes running load simulations on the power grid and stress-testing transformers to ensure they can handle sudden spikes in demand. The plan also accounts for external risks, such as extreme weather or forest fires, which could threaten the island’s power system.
This technical effort highlights the challenges of hosting large-scale events on an island, where maintaining reliable public services is essential. By working closely with local authorities, Endesa aims to ensure the power grid remains stable while thousands of people gather for the visit.
