Elite Athletes Discuss Challenges of High-Level Competition at La Laguna Sports Forum
Elite Spanish athletes Lydia Valentín, Saúl Craviotto, and Pedro Rodríguez shared insights on the challenges of high-level competition during the inaugural International Sports Forum at the Leal Theatre in La Laguna.
The Leal Theatre in San Cristóbal de La Laguna recently hosted the first International Sports Forum (FID) of La Laguna. The event drew a large crowd to hear three elite Spanish athletes discuss the often-hidden challenges of high-level competition. The opening day featured weightlifter Lydia Valentín, canoeist Saúl Craviotto, and footballer Pedro Rodríguez.
The speakers focused on how they manage success and bounce back from adversity. Lydia Valentín spoke about the physical toll of her career, detailing the surgeries and long rehabilitation she faced after the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also discussed the emotional complexity of receiving Olympic medals years after the fact, following doping sanctions against her rivals.
Saúl Craviotto compared an athlete’s career to a high-speed train, noting how quickly success can pass. The canoeist, who has built a career outside of sports as well, stated that he will only continue competing if he believes he can still contend for medals. He emphasized that his motivation remains purely focused on sporting excellence.
The session ended with Pedro Rodríguez, who reflected on his time playing for top European clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea, Roma, and Lazio. The Tenerife native delighted the local crowd by wearing a CD Tenerife jersey. He spoke fondly of his time winning titles with the Spanish national team and expressed his hope that the next generation of players will achieve similar success.
The forum aims to provide a space for discussing the sports world and humanizing the people behind the titles. The event continues with a second day featuring former tennis player Álex Corretja, basketball coach Pepu Hernández, and CD Tenerife president Felipe Miñambres.
