El Tanque Mayor and Deputy Mayor Under Investigation for Alleged Corruption
The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office has referred three cases involving allegations of embezzlement and prevarication against the mayor and first deputy mayor of El Tanque to the courts for formal investigation.
The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office is investigating three cases following complaints filed by Alejandro Morales Pérez, who served as the secretary-auditor for the El Tanque City Council from 2022 to 2026. The former official confirmed that the Prosecutor’s Office has now referred these cases to the courts to begin formal criminal investigations.
The allegations center on the conduct of Mayor María Esther Morales Sánchez and First Deputy Mayor Jennifert Rosales Pérez. Morales Pérez, who filed the complaints while in office in 2025, alleges potential crimes against public administration, including embezzlement, prevarication, and the unauthorized disclosure of secrets.
In Spanish local government, the secretary-auditor is responsible for financial oversight and ensuring that all administrative actions remain legal. Morales Pérez stated that he reported these concerns as part of his professional duty to protect public funds and ensure municipal transparency.
It is important to note that the court’s decision to process these complaints is only an initial step and does not imply that the individuals named are guilty. The investigation will now determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support the claims. At this stage, the specific administrative files, the amount of money involved, and the identity of the presiding court have not been disclosed.
In the El Tanque municipal government, the Mayor’s Office holds significant authority over Finance, Urban Planning, and Human Resources, while the Deputy Mayor’s Office manages Works, Services, and Housing. As there have been no official responses from the City Council or court rulings, the status of the municipal leaders remains uncertain while the investigation proceeds.
