El Sauzal in Tenerife has launched an international illustration contest featuring Mafalda, open until May 15, offering a €500 prize and exhibition opportunities to strengthen the town's cultural link with the iconic character.

El Sauzal, a town in Tenerife, has announced an international illustration contest featuring Mafalda. This competition aims to strengthen the town's link with Quino's famous character and boost its cultural presence worldwide.

Anyone over 18, from any country, can enter. Submissions are open until May 15 at 11:59 PM. The winner will receive a 500-euro cash prize and their artwork will be a main poster for the 23rd International Comic and Illustration Fair of Tenerife, taking place from October 29 to November 1.

This contest is part of El Sauzal City Council's cultural plan. On June 26, 2025, El Sauzal became one of only sixteen places globally to have an official Mafalda statue. This sculpture, created by Pablo Irrgang – the only artist authorized by Quino to make such representations – has inspired projects like this competition. Mayor Mariano Pérez said the contest highlights the town's dedication to culture and illustration, helping to share its image with the international creative community.

To register and read the full rules, applicants should visit the Cine+Cómics Foundation website. Each person can submit up to three different illustrations. These must be in PDF format, measure 53x84 centimeters, and follow a specific grid outlined in the competition rules.

Thirty original artworks, including the winning entry, will be displayed in a physical exhibition. This show opens on June 19 at the City Council Exhibition Hall and will be free for the public to visit until July 5. There will also be an online exhibition featuring all submitted works. This collaboration between the City Council and the Cine+Cómics Foundation aims to honor Quino and promote comics and illustration as important art forms, linking classic works with new artists and readers.
