El Sauzal Hosts 27th Verano de Cuento Oral Storytelling Festival
The 27th annual Verano de Cuento Oral Storytelling Festival returns to El Sauzal from July 24 to August 29, featuring a diverse program of performances and urban culture events to preserve oral traditions in the Canary Islands.
The 27th annual Verano de Cuento Oral Storytelling Festival is set to bring a vibrant cultural season to El Sauzal. Running from July 24 to August 29, the festival continues to be a key event for preserving oral traditions in the Canary Islands, with support from the regional government, the Cabildo of Tenerife, the local council, and the DISA Foundation.
The festival goes beyond traditional storytelling by blending different artistic styles. The full schedule is available on the event’s website and includes performances for both adults and families. Notably, the popular freestyle "rap battles" will return to the Plaza del Príncipe every Saturday at 9:00 p.m. for the fourth year in a row, highlighting the festival’s effort to connect with younger audiences through urban culture.
The event kicks off this Friday at 9:00 p.m. in the Plaza del Príncipe with an adult storytelling session featuring Jesús Bayón and Laura Escuela. On Saturday, July 25, the program expands to include children’s entertainment, such as a show by Títeres Tragaluz.
By bringing high-quality performances outside of the major cities, El Sauzal will serve as a hub for spoken word and improvisation for over a month. At the official presentation, festival director Juan Reyes, Mayor Mariano Pérez, Island Minister of Culture José Carlos Acha, and DISA Foundation representative Amayra Peñate Valdivielso all highlighted the importance of keeping the art of storytelling alive today.
