El Rosario Reschedules Patron Saint Festivities Amid Heatwave and Fire Alert
The El Rosario City Council has rescheduled and modified its patron saint festivities, including the La Esperanza pilgrimage, to mitigate fire risks and protect public safety during a severe heatwave.
The El Rosario City Council has adjusted the schedule for its patron saint festivities to ensure public safety and protect the local environment. Due to a level two forest fire alert issued by the Cabildo de Tenerife amid the current heatwave, the 50th anniversary of the La Esperanza pilgrimage will now follow a revised plan.
Following an emergency meeting this Friday, officials decided to move key events to cooler times of the day to protect both attendees and the animals involved in the procession. On Sunday, August 2, the Eucharist will now be held at 6:00 p.m., with the pilgrimage procession following at 7:00 p.m. The event, which includes about thirty carts and floats, will wrap up with a street party featuring the Wamampy and Acapulco orchestras starting at 9:00 p.m.
To further reduce fire risks, Saturday’s scheduled fireworks display has been cancelled and replaced with a cultural performance on the municipal steps. Other events have also been rescheduled to avoid the hottest parts of the day: the 4th Villa de La Esperanza Horse Ring Tournament will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and the transfer of the Banner to the Nuestra Señora de La Esperanza parish—featuring the ACM Princesa Yaiza and singer Miriam Cruz—is set for 7:00 p.m. that evening.
These adjustments are a standard part of emergency management in the Canary Islands, where extreme weather and terrain require careful planning for outdoor events. By making these changes, the local administration is prioritizing the safety of its citizens while ensuring the long-standing tradition can still be celebrated responsibly.
