El Rosario Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Dumping in Tenerife
Authorities in El Rosario, Tenerife, have identified and charged two individuals for illegal dumping, underscoring a strict crackdown on environmental violations involving hazardous waste.
Waste management in Tenerife is back in the headlines after authorities in El Rosario took action against illegal dumping. Local police have identified the people responsible for two major incidents, highlighting the ongoing struggle to stop waste from being abandoned in public spaces.
In the first case, officers found 24 refrigerator casings dumped in the Llano del Moro area. The person responsible, a resident of Arona, was identified and has admitted to the act. A second incident occurred in Bocacangrejo, where a local resident was caught dumping a mix of rubble, household goods, and car parts. Both individuals now face "very serious" charges under the local municipal waste ordinance.
These actions are more than just antisocial; they pose a significant environmental threat. National laws, specifically Law 7/2022 on Waste and Contaminated Soils, strictly regulate the disposal of hazardous materials. Items like refrigerators contain refrigerant gases that must be handled at specialized facilities to prevent them from leaking into the soil and causing long-term damage.
El Rosario’s mayor, Escolástico Gil, praised the police for their work in tracking down the offenders. He also urged the public to use official municipal collection services, which are free and designed to prevent this kind of environmental harm. The fines for these offenses are set at the maximum level to deter others and protect the island’s public spaces and natural beauty.
