The El Rosario City Council has approved an emergency budget of 2.8 million euros to repair coastal infrastructure damaged by recent storms and stabilize hazardous slopes.

The El Rosario City Council recently approved an emergency budget of 2.8 million euros to repair coastal infrastructure damaged by increasingly unstable weather. According to the local newspaper El Día, these funds will be drawn from the municipal treasury surplus.

The money is earmarked for urgent repairs at critical sites hit by Storm Therese, including the Radazul breakwater, Charco de Tabaiba, and the Costa Caricia road. The budget also covers the stabilization of a slope in Tabaiba Baja, where a large rockfall recently posed a safety risk to local residents.

Mayor Escolástico Gil (IR-Verdes) explained that these 1.7 million euros in repairs were not part of the original annual budget, necessitating the emergency allocation. To help offset these costs, the council plans to apply for aid from the Ministry of Territorial Policy, which can cover up to half the expenses for repairing public infrastructure damaged by natural disasters.

The budget amendment passed with support from IR-Verdes, PSOE, CC, and Vox, while the Popular Party voted against it. During the same session, the council also voted unanimously to name a street after Candelaria Aguiar Díaz, known as "Yaya," to honor her leadership of the Llano del Moro Wrestling Club.

These budgetary shifts highlight a growing trend across the Canary Islands, where councils are increasingly forced to prioritize climate-related infrastructure repairs over other planned investments.
