El Médano Bike Lane Sparks Controversy Over Parking Shortage

The installation of a new bike lane on Avenida Juan Carlos I in El Médano has triggered political and public backlash due to the loss of over 100 parking spaces in an area already facing severe shortages.

A new bike lane on Avenida Juan Carlos I in El Médano has sparked a heated political and social debate. The project, located in one of Granadilla de Abona’s busiest tourist areas, has caused significant unrest among residents because it removed over 100 parking spaces in a neighborhood already struggling with a chronic lack of parking.

Jennifer Miranda, spokesperson for the Socialist municipal group, has formally requested that the city suspend the bike lane. She argues that the council failed to provide alternative parking for residents and questions the project's legal standing, noting that the city currently lacks a specific ordinance to regulate these lanes.

This conflict highlights the ongoing struggle to balance sustainable urban planning with the practical needs of residents in crowded coastal towns. Miranda pointed out that previous administrations had planned solutions to ease the parking shortage, such as installing modular parking facilities, opening up land for public use, and negotiating the use of private plots. She also suggested implementing resident-priority parking zones.

The Socialist group has criticized the current governing coalition—made up of Coalición Canaria, VOX, and the Partido Popular—for failing to act during their first year in office. With the busy summer season approaching, critics warn that the combination of increased tourism and scheduled events will lead to traffic gridlock unless the council takes immediate steps to better manage public space for both visitors and locals.
