Local authorities in Granadilla de Abona have closed El Médano beach to swimmers due to health safety concerns. The Tenerife town council announced the decision on Wednesday, September 23, following routine water quality tests that showed a change in microbiological levels.
The precautionary measure was triggered by the detection of enterococci at 210 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters (cfu/100 ml). This slightly exceeds the municipal limit of 200 cfu/100 ml, a threshold set by Spanish national regulations to protect public health.
As a result, the council has raised the red flag, banning swimming until new water samples confirm that bacteria levels have returned to a safe range. Lifeguards are currently patrolling the beach and asking the public to follow safety instructions while the restriction is in effect.
This incident underscores the importance of the regular health checks conducted at local beaches, including El Cabezo, La Jaquita, Leocadio Machado, La Tejita, and Los Abrigos. While the closure at El Médano is only a precaution, officials have not yet set a reopening date, as they are waiting for further test results to ensure the water is safe for the public.
