El Hierro Musician Deivy Gains Global Traction With Debut Album on Immigrant Experience

The Canary Islands music scene has a new voice abroad: David Mesa Rodríguez, known to fans as Deivy. The 29-year-old musician from La Frontera, El Hierro, is currently based in Eindhoven, where he has seen his debut album, Kilómetros de mí, gain impressive momentum. Without any paid marketing, the record has already surpassed 2,000 streams in less than a month.

Mesa’s work reflects the reality of many young people who have left the Canary Islands in search of better opportunities. His music, a blend of Latin pop and urban rhythms, serves as a personal diary of the immigrant experience. Through his lyrics, he explores the tension between leaving home and finding one's way in a new country, all while staying connected to his island roots. His success highlights a growing trend: independent artists are now using digital platforms to reach a global audience without needing the support of major record labels.

The album currently features nine tracks, including singles like Amsterdam, Bajo el puente, and Sin ruido. Mesa plans to release two more songs, Documento en blanco and Me lo llevo, at the end of May to coincide with Canary Islands Day. Beyond the music itself, the artist is critical of the modern industry, which he feels has become too standardized. He advocates for a return to songwriting that prioritizes emotional depth and storytelling.

Mesa’s musical journey began in his teens, playing bass in folk groups and bands across Tenerife. Now, he is focused on building his career on streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. For him, this project is more than just entertainment; it is a way to process the challenges of starting over in a foreign land while keeping his cultural identity at the heart of his work.
