El Hierro is emerging as a premier filming destination, leveraging its diverse landscapes and streamlined administrative processes to attract major productions that provide a significant boost to the local economy.

El Hierro is fast becoming a go-to destination for the film industry, with several new projects recently confirmed for the island. The local council (Cabildo) has successfully attracted major productions, cementing the island’s reputation as a prime filming location. Rubén Armiche, the Councilor for Culture, attributes this success to the island’s diverse natural landscapes and a streamlined administrative process that makes it easy for film crews to get to work.

The most significant project announced is Acoso, a feature film directed by Joel Angelino. It stars actress Mirtha Ibarra alongside local performer Águeda Lima. With a screenplay by Amílcar Salatti and cinematography by Ernesto Granado, the film aims to blend a compelling story with the island’s unique scenery. Additionally, filmmaker Santiago Ríos—a well-known figure in the Canary Islands—has chosen El Hierro for his next short film, though he is keeping the plot under wraps for now.

This trend is more than just a cultural boost; it is a key part of the island’s economic strategy. By involving local residents in casting calls for extras and hiring them for technical crews, the authorities are ensuring that these productions provide direct benefits to the local community.

This growth follows a broader push to promote the island, including a successful showcase at the Malaga Festival. While the Canary Islands have long used tax incentives and stunning scenery to attract filmmakers, El Hierro is now entering a new chapter. By positioning itself on the international film circuit, the island is not only gaining prestige but also boosting tourism by linking its image to high-quality cultural projects.
