El Fraile Plot: Health Hazard, Danger to Children
An abandoned plot in El Fraile, Tenerife, is a health hazard filled with rubbish, syringes, and rats, leading residents to demand official intervention from authorities.
An abandoned piece of land in El Fraile, Tenerife, has become a health hazard and a danger to the community. The plot is filled with rubbish bags, syringes, building waste, and food scraps, along with many rats, making local residents very worried.
Sandra Tormo, from the El Fraile Neighborhood Association, has brought the situation to public attention. She warned that the plot's condition is now "unbearable" and "a real danger to children" who live or play nearby. Tormo spoke about it on the TV Canaria show "Ponte al día" (Catch Up), where she criticised the authorities for not doing enough.
According to Tormo, while some neighbours and volunteers organise clean-ups of abandoned plots, this shouldn't be the regular solution. She stressed, "The effort is admirable, but it's not safe or suitable because it carries clear health risks."
The association wants public bodies to take effective action, implementing long-term solutions to stop these areas from turning into illegal rubbish dumps repeatedly. This is a recurring issue across the Canary Islands, directly harming public health and community life.
