El Afecto Ilustrado Revives Palomino Quintets at Tenerife Auditorium
El Afecto Ilustrado will perform all string quintets for two violas by José Palomino de la Quintana at the Tenerife Auditorium's Chamber Series this Tuesday and Thursday, reviving the Enlightenment-era composer's work.
The Tenerife Auditorium's Chamber Series is set to host two special concerts by the ensemble El Afecto Ilustrado. They will perform all the string quintets for two violas by José Palomino de la Quintana (1753-1810). These concerts, titled "Quintets for the Count I" and "Quintets for the Count II," will be held this Tuesday and Thursday, both starting at 7:30 PM. You can buy individual tickets, or save 25% by purchasing a subscription for both performances.
The period instrument ensemble for these concerts includes Adrián Linares and Vadym Makarenko on violins, Ricardo Gil and Víctor Gil on violas, and Diego Pérez on cello.
El Afecto Ilustrado is bringing these quintets back to life to showcase José Palomino de la Quintana's exceptional talent. As violinist Adrián Linares explains, Palomino "deserves a prominent place among the musical works of the Enlightenment era in the Iberian Peninsula," thanks to his "beautiful lyricism, accurate harmony, and a style often foreshadowing future aesthetics."
Composed in 1780, this collection of string quintets for two violas was dedicated to the sixth Count of Fernán Núñez, who served as the Spanish ambassador to Portugal until 1788. While they build upon the style of Luigi Boccherini, Palomino's own unique touch is very evident.
The complete sheet music for Palomino's string quintets was published in 2020 by the Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts of San Miguel Arcángel and the Canarian Museum of Las Palmas. Following this, in July 2021, El Afecto Ilustrado gave the modern-day premiere of the last three quintets in the collection. They then went on to record all six quintets for the Lindoro label at the El Sauzal Theater.
This recording is intended to be a key resource, not just for musicians interested in the Iberian music of the late 18th century, but also for musicologists and other experts in the field.
