Madrid-based publisher Ediciones Antígona is expanding its catalog of contemporary Canarian theater by releasing key works by Irma Correa and Antonio Tabares, two of which have been selected for the 2027 university entrance exam curriculum.

Ediciones Antígona is boosting its support for contemporary Canarian theater this autumn. The Madrid-based publisher, founded in 2006 by Isaac Juncos and Conchita Piña, announced that it will add key works by Irma Correa and Antonio Tabares—two of the Canary Islands' most influential playwrights—to its catalog starting in September.

This move is both a cultural milestone and an academic one: Correa’s Friday and Tabares’s La punta del iceberg (The Tip of the Iceberg) have been chosen for the 2027 university entrance exam (PAU) literary anthology. To help students prepare for the upcoming school year, the publisher has opened pre-orders on its website to ensure schools have easy access to the texts.

Both plays have already seen significant success. Friday, which won the 2010 SGAE Theater Prize, tells the story of a Nigerian minor’s journey to Europe with dreams of becoming a professional footballer like Messi. It follows Correa’s previous work with Antígona, Ulloa. Tabares’s La punta del iceberg, a winner of the Tirso de Molina Ibero-American Prize and the Réplica award, has gained international acclaim, including film adaptations and translations, for its sharp look at corporate power and burnout.

The partnership goes beyond these two titles. Antígona plans to release a double volume of Correa’s Los Nocturnos and El viejo, el joven y el mar. Additionally, Tabares’s Libros cruzados will join the "Malpaís" collection, a project developed with the Auditorio de Tenerife to promote performing arts and music. Through these efforts, Antígona continues to strengthen its reputation for contemporary theater, building a vital bridge between island-based creators and the national academic community.
