Echeyde Wins Key Conference Cup Match, Boosts Quarterfinal Bid
Tenerife Echeyde's men's team defeated Rapid Bucharest 17-14 in Phase 2 of the Conference Cup, positioning them strongly for a quarterfinal berth.
The Tenerife Echeyde men's team has taken a big step forward in their European journey, securing an important victory in Phase 2 of the Conference Cup. The Canarian side beat Rapid Bucharest 14-17 in Split, Croatia. This result puts them in a strong position to advance to the quarterfinals of the continental competition.
The match highlighted the resilience of the team, led by Albert Español. Despite a tough start, falling behind 2-0 and then 8-5 by halftime, Echeyde managed to turn things around. Their biggest challenge came in the third period when Rapid went up 10-7. From that point, the Tenerife team began a crucial comeback.
Echeyde's turnaround came from much better defence and more effective attacks. Players like Iker González, Araya, and Tom De Weerd scored crucial goals. Goalkeeper Davor Skokandic's performance and Sergio Prunell's defensive work were also key to holding back the physical Romanian team, who were good at using their player advantages.
A run of five unanswered goals saw Echeyde take the lead at 10-11. However, Rapid equalized several times, making it 14-14 in the closing stages. But Albert Español's strategy and De Weerd's execution in the final minutes, including an empty-net goal, secured the final 14-17 victory.
This victory is the first step towards reaching the quarterfinals of the continental competition. The Canarian team faces another challenge today against the host team, Mornar, at 6:45 PM Canarian time.
