Drago Park Breaks Visitor Record, Tops 240,000 in 2025
Drago Park in Icod de los Vinos achieved a record-breaking 2025 with over 240,000 visitors, solidifying its position as a premier Tenerife attraction and a significant cultural and environmental hub.
Drago Park in Icod de los Vinos had a record-breaking year in 2025, solidifying its place as one of Tenerife's most special attractions. Visitor numbers show strong, consistent growth: 2024 saw a 21% increase, followed by another 17% rise in 2025, bringing the total visitors for the year to over 240,000. Tourists from mainland Spain and Germany especially love this spot, drawn by its unique blend of stunning scenery, local heritage, and commitment to sustainability.
The ancient Dragon Tree, centuries old, stands as strong as ever, cared for within a garden that showcases the rich nature and culture of the area. Drago Park is a must-visit for anyone wanting to explore Tenerife's living history, connect with nature, and see Icod de los Vinos' dedication to responsible, high-quality tourism. It's much more than a simple botanical garden; it offers a real journey through the island's diverse natural landscapes. As you walk its trails, you can see how plants change with altitude, mirroring Tenerife's various ecosystems, from dry coastal zones to the damp mountain peaks.
In 2025, the park also became a cultural hub by hosting the Canary Islands Environmental Film Festival (FICMEC), led by filmmaker David Baute. Choosing Drago Park as the festival's location highlighted its role as a place for environmental discussion and awareness. This commitment will continue in 2026 when the festival returns to this special venue.
Gerardo Rizo, the Councillor for Tourism and head of Icodtesa (the public company managing the park), stated that "2025 was the year we solidified a new approach to tourism." He noted that after a significant rise in visitors in 2024, the upward trend continued, leading to a historic record and strong overall growth. Rizo expressed his satisfaction with these results and specifically thanked the park's management team for their daily efforts, which he believes were essential to this success.
The councillor pointed out that "it was a wise decision to promote Drago Park as a strong and consistent tourist landmark." He added that the park's presence in various advertisements, including Binter's in-flight magazine, screens at Tenerife North Airport, ferry routes between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, and roadside billboards, played a key role in boosting its visibility and drawing in new types of visitors.
The positive results of 2025 are directly linked to the Strategic Tourism Plan created in 2024. A major step was the launch of Icod de los Vinos' new tourism brand, 'A destination to feel,' and its promotional video at FITUR 2025, which significantly boosted the municipality's image. This was further supported by the new website, icoddelosvinosturismo.com. This comprehensive platform showcases all local tourism offerings, featuring not only Drago Park but also historical buildings, religious sites, local food, natural wonders like Cueva del Viento, and many other experiences that define the area.
Looking ahead to 2026, Rizo announced that new projects will continue within Drago Park and as part of the Strategic Tourism Plan. He explained, "The aim is to spread out our offerings and encourage visitors to explore other parts of Icod de los Vinos, highlighting its natural beauty, local cuisine, and cultural tourism." He noted that initiatives like the exhibitions at Casa de los Cáceres, which focus on the municipality's history and traditions, and the Ethnographic Space within the park itself, dedicated to Icod de los Vinos' ancient crafts, are part of this strategy.
The Icod councillor believes that "tourism is a crucial part of the local economy and needs to keep growing with policies that support private businesses." He stressed that "recognizing the efforts of entrepreneurs who have invested in restoring historical buildings in the town center to create tourist accommodation is vital for revitalizing the urban area and building a sustainable destination with its own unique character."
Drago Park, with its ongoing growth and impressive results, serves as the best example that this approach to tourism is not only achievable but also perfectly aligned with the spirit and future of Icod de los Vinos.
