The Spanish box office welcomes a diverse slate of new releases this week, ranging from DC’s horror film Clayface and Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s The Samurai and the Prisoner to local Spanish productions, literary adaptations, and the long-awaited LAIKA animation Wildwood.

The Spanish box office is seeing a major refresh this week with a diverse lineup of new releases. Industry data shows that distributors are balancing their risks by mixing big-budget international franchises with family films and local auteur projects.

In the horror genre, DC Studios is releasing Clayface, directed by James Watkins with a story by Mike Flanagan. The film follows Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), an actor who undergoes a dangerous experimental treatment after a disfiguring accident, leading to monstrous results. Also hitting theaters is The Samurai and the Prisoner by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Fresh from the Sitges Film Festival and a successful run in Japan, the film explores themes of honor and redemption during wartime.

Spanish cinema also has a strong presence this week. Albert Pintó’s thriller Lions in Winter, based on the novel by Carlos Augusto Casas, features an all-star cast including Luis Zahera, Roberto Álamo, and Inma Cuesta. Filmed in Madrid and Gran Canaria, the story follows a father’s desperate search for justice after a family tragedy. Additionally, comedian José Mota makes his directorial debut with Arriba Tutto, a historical drama he also stars in alongside Karra Elejalde and Olivia Molina.

Rounding out the week are a mix of literary adaptations and animation. Georgia Oakley offers a fresh take on Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, focusing on the bond between the two sisters. For animation fans, LAIKA Studios is releasing Wildwood, a stop-motion epic that took sixteen years to create. Finally, the popular MagicBox toy line comes to the big screen in Superthings: The Movie, a family-friendly adventure directed by Víctor Monigote.
