Diverse Film Lineup Hits Spanish Theaters for Peak Summer Season
Spain’s summer film lineup features a diverse selection of releases, ranging from the animated Minions & Monsters and the gritty The Death of Robin Hood to various Spanish dramas and international thrillers.
This week’s film releases in Spain offer a remarkably varied lineup, as distributors aim to attract a wide range of viewers during this peak summer season. The selection spans everything from big-budget animation to gritty dramas and suspenseful thrillers.
In animation, the Minions franchise returns with Minions & Monsters. Directed by Pierre Coffin, the film hopes to replicate the series' massive commercial success by following the characters as they navigate Hollywood. The Spanish-language version features some unique casting, including filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia and athlete Tomás Guarino. On the other end of the spectrum, the studio A24 is releasing The Death of Robin Hood. Directed by Michael Sarnoski and starring Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård, this film trades classic adventure for a darker, more existential take on the legendary figure.
Spanish cinema and European co-productions also have a strong presence this week. 9 Moons, directed by Patricia Ortega, arrives in theaters following its festival run in Málaga and Tenerife. Filmed partly in the Canary Islands and starring María León, Jorge Sanz, Sara Sálamo, and Zack Gómez-Rolls, the film uses a fantastical premise to explore themes of family and identity. Additionally, Pedro Aguilera’s Hunting Day—a Spanish-French co-production—offers a modern update to the style of Carlos Saura. This drama features an impressive ensemble cast, including Carmen Machi, Rossy de Palma, and Blanca Portillo, and uses a rural setting to heighten personal tensions.
Rounding out the international offerings is the French comedy-drama The Musicians, directed by Grégory Magne, which follows a group of elite performers preparing for a high-stakes concert. For fans of suspense, director Ben Wheatley presents Normal. Written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and starring Bob Odenkirk, this action thriller delves into the dark secrets of a small town. Finally, the biographical drama Lady Nazca, directed by Damien Dorsaz, stars Devrim Lingnau as archaeologist Maria Reiche. The film provides a thoughtful look at Reiche’s scientific work and her dedication to preserving history in the Peruvian desert.
