A man died while reportedly spearfishing off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Tuesday, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of the fatal accident.

Safety in recreational diving is back in the spotlight after a man died off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife this Tuesday. According to local reports, rescue teams recovered his body near the Palmetum—an area close to the city center and the Maritime Park that is known for challenging currents and terrain that require constant caution.

The search began around 7:00 p.m. after the man was reported missing. A rescue team, which included an aircraft from the regional government’s Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), located his body just an hour later.

While initial reports suggest the man was spearfishing, the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. This tragedy highlights the risks of water sports in the Canary Islands, where changing weather conditions and physical exhaustion are frequent factors in maritime accidents. Authorities are now working to determine whether external conditions or a specific incident during the dive led to the fatality.
