Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic is urging drivers to prioritize vehicle maintenance, proper cargo securing, and regular rest breaks to ensure safety during the anticipated 17 million trips expected over the 2026 Easter holiday.

The 2026 Easter holiday is expected to be one of the busiest times on Spanish roads, with the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) forecasting 17 million trips. With such high traffic density, authorities are urging drivers to take personal responsibility, noting that following traffic rules is essential for preventing accidents and avoiding fines.

The DGT is placing a strong focus on vehicle maintenance. Driving with poor visibility—such as faulty windshield wipers—can result in an 80-euro fine. Tires are also being closely monitored; depending on the level of wear or damage, fines for poor tire condition range from 90 to 200 euros.

Safety also depends on how you pack your vehicle. Under Article 14 of the General Traffic Regulations, all cargo must be properly secured to prevent it from shifting or blocking your view. The DGT recommends using the trunk whenever possible or using aerodynamic roof boxes. Failing to secure your load properly can lead to a 200-euro fine. Additionally, trying to adjust luggage while driving is considered a distraction and carries an 80-euro penalty.

Beyond vehicle safety, the Civil Guard is warning drivers about the dangers of fatigue. They recommend taking a break every two hours or 200 kilometers to stretch and stay hydrated. Please note that eating or drinking behind the wheel is also an infraction, punishable by an 80-euro fine, as it reduces your ability to react quickly. Planning your journey carefully and maintaining healthy habits while on the road are the best ways to ensure a safe trip.
