DGT Warns Fans: Obstructing Car Windows With World Cup Decorations Could Lead to Fines
The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic has warned fans that decorating cars for the 2026 World Cup must not obstruct driver visibility, or they risk fines of up to 200 euros.
Excitement is building for tonight’s 2026 World Cup round-of-32 match, and many fans are decorating their cars to show their support for the Spanish national team. However, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is reminding drivers that these festive displays must not compromise road safety.
Under Article 19.1 of the General Traffic Regulations, drivers are legally required to maintain a clear view through all of their vehicle’s windows. Traffic authorities warn that placing flags, stickers, or ornaments on windshields, side windows, or rearview mirrors is an offense if it blocks the driver's vision or interferes with safety equipment.
While decorating your car isn't strictly banned, any accessory that limits your view or distracts you while driving can lead to a fine of up to 200 euros. Although these fines do not result in the loss of license points, the DGT emphasizes that road safety must remain the top priority.
Officers have the authority to penalize any decorations that hinder a driver's ability to react, especially during periods of heavy traffic and public celebration. The DGT reminds fans that supporting the national team is no excuse for ignoring traffic laws.
