DGT Warns: Eating, Drinking While Driving Risks Fines
Spain's DGT warns that any distraction behind the wheel, including seemingly harmless acts like eating or drinking, compromises driver safety and can lead to fines and license point deductions.
Distracted driving is a major cause of accidents in the Canary Islands and across Spain. Drivers often do things that seem harmless but are actually very dangerous for themselves and everyone else on the road.
Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) warns that any distraction behind the wheel makes driving more dangerous. Staying fully focused is crucial for avoiding accidents and reacting quickly to problems.
Distractions cause many accidents. The DGT explains that getting caught driving distracted means not only a fine but also points deducted from your driving license.
While Spain's general traffic rules don't specifically ban eating or drinking in the car, the Traffic and Road Safety Law states clearly that drivers must always have full freedom of movement, a clear view, and their complete attention on the road. This ensures their safety, the safety of passengers, and other road users.
Traffic police can see eating or drinking as a minor offense, leading to an 80-euro fine. But if it creates a dangerous situation, fines can be as high as 200 euros.
Eating or drinking is seen as dangerous because you often drive with only one hand for several seconds, and you might not see everything around you. Picking up a bottle and drinking also distracts you mentally, which slows down your reaction time.
